Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Fill the Bottle

Fill the bottle about 3/4 full with vegetable oil, then add water until nearly full.

2

Add Color

Drop 10+ drops of food coloring into the bottle. Watch the drops sink through the oil to the water.

3

Drop the Tablet

Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into pieces and drop them in. Watch the magic lava lamp effect!

4

Add Light

For extra effect, shine a flashlight through the bottom of the bottle in a dark room.

The Science Behind It

Oil and water do not mix because of polarity differences. Gas bubbles from the tablet attach to colored water droplets, lifting them before they sink again.

🤓 Fun Fact

Commercial lava lamps use wax and heat, but the motion principle still depends on density changes.
